Insurance

Why private pay? Real talk.

“Kara views late-stage capitalism as a plague and understands that some of the main contributors to stress and mental health concerns are financial stress and poverty. Kara is constantly trying to balance providing quality care that is accessible financially, but that also allows her to put food on the table for her own household. In an ideal world, therapists would be paid what we are worth, and our income would be provided by Universal Health Coverage or Medicare-for-All.”

At this time Kara has opted to stop accepting insurance, because the model is not sustainable for a solo practitioner. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, Kara can give you a superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. It’s worth calling your insurer to ask what they cover before you start.

If affording therapy is a hardship for you, please ask about the limited number of reduced-fee sessions and payment plans. You won’t be asked to prove anything.

Your right to a Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, in writing, at least 1 business day before your service. You can also ask your provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do you take insurance?

No. At this time Kara has opted to stop accepting insurance, because the model is not sustainable for a solo practitioner. She can give you a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, and accepts major credit cards and HSA/FSA cards.

What are your hours?

Meetings (therapy appointments and consultations) are available by appointment. Please reach out if you would like to schedule something.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. You can book a free 15-minute call online, or ask Kara to reach out to you.

Is sex therapy hands-on?

No. Sex therapy is talk therapy. There is never any touching, undressing or sexual activity in a session.

Can I see you if I live outside Massachusetts?

Kara is licensed in Massachusetts and can only legally practice there. For telehealth, you need to be in Massachusetts during your session.

Do you partner with other organizations?

Yes. Kara works with Pineapple Support, an organization that connects people in the adult entertainment industry with therapy professionals.

Is the office accessible?

The office is on the second floor and reached by stairs. Unfortunately, the building cannot accommodate clients with mobility differences; clients who use mobility aids would be better, and more safely, served by telehealth. See the route.
